The health system

Every person starts with 100 HP, during the game most will inevitably be wounded in some way or other, causing their HP to deteriorate. When someone reaches 0 HP they become critically wounded, at which point they'll start suffocating. If no one helps them, they will eventually die. A person dies when they reach -100 HP. People who have between 0 and 100 HP are easy to treat, those between -100 and 0 are a bit harder. As a new medic, you are expected to be able to treat people, whose health is between 0 and 100 HP, but you should learn how to treat the rest after a little practice.

Damage is measured in points, similar to HP, however for each point of damage a person sustains, 1 hit point is reduced. There are four categories of damage, a person can sustain:

  • Suffocation
  • Toxin
  • Burns
  • Brute

Toxins

Toxin damage is caused by being exposed to airborne plasma without protection, being injected with toxins or other substances but due to the oh-so-helpful bartender, the most common cause of toxin poisoning is alcohol.

Toxins are relatively easy to treat, simply inject the person 2 or 3 times with an anti-toxin syringe and he'll be good in no time. Note that it takes a short while for the full effect of the anti-toxin syringe to take full effect.

Ожоги

Ожоги обычно происходят от огня, или от низких температур космоса. Лучше всего дать таблетку келотана, найти ее можно в fire first aid kits.

Brute

Brute force damage is by far the most common and easiest damage you'll be treating. It's caused by brute force on the body. If someone hits you with a tool, a toolbox or anything, really, they'll inflict brute force damage on you.

The most common location of brute force wounds are the chest and head. In the upper right corner of your screen, on the guy in underwear you can select where you're targeting the person you're interacting with. The usual way of treating brute force damage is to apply a bruise pack, found in all white first aid kits, on the chest and head. That should remove most-all of the damage. If you're running low on bruise packs you can strip them naked and examine their body to see where the damage is, before applying them.

More in Medical procedure

Summary (as this section is important): 0-100 HP means a person is wounded, but otherwise ok, -100-0 means the person is in critical condition and will die if not treated immediately, -100 or less means the person is dead. Four categories of damage: suffocation, toxin, burns and brute, each with their own methods of treatment

More on fire damage

Fire damage works in an accumulative manner and heals over time.

One use of the welder causes 15 damage on your target, however that's just the start.

Repeated use of the welder causes an additional 15 damage, but not looking from the current damage, but rather from the previous maximum damage inflicted.

In other words, using the welder twice on a target will inflict a total of 30 burns damage. Waiting about 2 minutes will reduce this damage to 0, using the welder again, however, does not bring the total damage to 15, but to 45. So the previous maximum (30) + an additional 15 from this last use. Similarly, if you wait for this damage to heal a bit, the next use will bring the total damage to 60 damage (45 + 15).

One way of treating this damage is to use ointment. Ointment works rather strangely. Say you have a patient with 90 burns damage on them, using ointment will reduce this damage down to 50 or so. After this, if you apply more ointment it will just reset the damage to 50.

In other words, if someone has 90 burns damage on them and you use ointment on him, reducing it to 50 and you then wait for the damage to reduce to 0, if you apply more ointment on him during that healing process, or even when it's at 0 already, will only return this damage to 50, slowing his recovery a lot.

Medical procedure

For an alternative guide, see Doctoring

This is a guide on how to be a good doctor. Every medical doctor on the station should read this.

Start of a game

At the game's start you should open the first aid you spawn with, take out the health analyzer and put it in one pocket, then take out the syringe with inaprovaline and set it to inject, then place it in the other pocket. Head over to the NanoMed Plus and get a bottle of inaprovaline. Put it in your first aid kit. Then walk over to the toxin first aid kit and take an anti-toxin syringe from it and put it into your first aid kit. Then put the first aid kit in your backpack. You are ready.

What to do until mayhem starts?

There are two strategies. One is to wait at the medbay and wait for people to come request to be healed or be brought in for healing. An alternative is to be a paramedic and patrol around the station and treat people as you find them. You might get more work this way, however experience shows you have a much higher chance of dying this way and spending 30 minutes as a ghost isn't that fun.

Found someone on the floor, now what?

Okay, so you found your first patient. You should follow these steps with every patient you find (This is a summary of the more extensive explanation below):

  • Shot of inaprovaline
  • Analyze their health
  • Determine if they're in critical condition
  • If necessary, perform CPR until they're stabilized
  • Treat their wounds
  • Examine them again at the end
  • Resupply used medicine

Gathering the required information

  • Your immediate first reaction should be to grab that inaprovaline from your pocket and inject 5 units of it into the patient. This will keep him alive for an additional 15 seconds, which should be enough time to start reviving.
  • After you inject them, switch hands and get the health analyzer from your pocket and check their health status.
  • It is now important to see how much damage he has received. Basically there are four possibilities:
    • The person is dead, adding up all the damage he's sustained adds up to more than 200
    • The person is in critical condition and the sum of the toxin, burns and brute damage adds up to less than 100 (so add up all numbers except suffocation damage and it's less than 100)
    • The person is in critical condition and the sum of the toxin, burns and brute damages add up to more than 100
    • The person is injured, but stable. He's sustained less than 100 damage in total.
  • If the person is dead, there's little you can do for them,
  • If the person is critical with less than 100 damage, excluding suffocation damage, you should immediately drag them to an area with air, remove their mask as well as your own and perform CPR on them by clicking on them with the intent to help and then waiting a few seconds until you get a reply, saying you should repeat CPR at least every 7 seconds.
  • If the person is critical with more than 100 damage, excluding suffocation damage, they can only be saved by the cryo chamber. Inject them with 5 more units of inaprovaline and quickly drag them to the medbay cryo chamber.
  • If the person is injured, but stable, you can treat them on the spot. When you're done just click on them a few times with the intent to help and they'll be brought back on their feet.

Actually treating damage

If you've kept the load-out this guide suggests then you should have the following equipment ready, assuming this is your first injured person discovered:

  • 3 x bruisepack
  • 2 x ointment
  • 1 x antitoxin syringe
  • 1 x inaprovaline syringe (2/3 full, as you've used some to stabilize them)

You have everything you need to treat any type of damage.

The most common type of damage is brute force, you treat that with a bruisepack. Simply apply a bruisepack on their chest and their head, as these are by far the most common injured areas. To set which part of the body you're targeting, click on the part you wish to target on the man in underwear in the upper right corner of the screen.

Alternatively, the person might be experiencing toxin damage. To treat toxin damage, you should take that syringe of anti-toxins out of your first aid kit and inject the person with it. You should apply two doses if his toxin damage reads out more than 25. Note that this heals slowly, and you should monitor them for a while and apply more anti-toxins if needed. Toxin damage, if left untreated, often accumulates over time. If you inject someone with a syringe filled with toxins, they will accumulate damage until the effects wear off or they are treated with anti-toxins.

Burns damage is a bit harder to treat, due to the way ointment works. Use ointment only once on the victim, reapplying it will only worsen his situation.

The last type of damage is suffocation damage. Assuming the person is not in critical condition, as that should have been taken care of by now, the remainder of the suffocation damage should slowly go away. If the majority of it is still suffocation damage, then you should stay by their side for a while and try to shake them to wake them up. The damage will heal on it's own, assuming you're in a room which has oxygen or if they're wearing working internals.

20 people who need treating and you, dealing with stress

There are four common (good) ways of reacting in a situation where you are the only doctor who isn't in the morgue yet and you have a thousand people who need treating. Usually this consists of a mixture of people with injuries and diseases.

First come, first serve

First come, first serve (FCFS), also known as First in, first out (FIFO) is the tactic employed by most doctors during times when there are up to three people waiting at the reception desk. Simply treat the first who comes first and once you're completely done, treat the second and so on.

Best effort

This is a tactic, which can be used at times, when there are 5+ people in the medbay, all whining about how they're hurting. Simply grab your analyzer in one hand, walk to the first, scan them, treat any outstanding injury (If he has 60 toxin damage, 10 brute damage and 3 fire damage only treat toxin) and then move on to the next. If time permits check their status before you move on, but if that's not possible, skip that step and just move on to the next patient closest to you and repeat.

Hybrid system

Although it is expected that each medical doctor will decide how to react in such a situation for themselves, there is no harm in providing a good, field tested system, which works. For explanations of what each line means, read the above.

When a large amount of patients suddenly appears in the medbay you should begin with a basic triage system:

  • Take note of who is on the floor
  • Run to each and analyze them, if they're dead, remember that so you won't check on them again
  • When you find someone in critical condition or with a severe disease, immediately drag them inside.
    • If they have a serious disease and it's treatable, treat it with more medicine that you need and leave them somewhere where you'll remember
    • If they have a serious disease which isn't treatable and might infect other patients, move them to one of the two wards and let them die in there
    • If they are in critical condition, move them into the cryo room, strip them quickly and throw them into the cryo cell and turn it on, don't worry about the beakers, just get to the other patients.
  • Once you've checked all the people who are on the floor, look at the ones who yell "I've got GBS" or such the loudest and treat them next. Again, shove more medication in them than is really necessary. Don't bother using your health analyzer on them once done, there are other patients waiting. If he makes it, good, if not, you tried (Best effort technique)
  • After that you can assume you've taken care of all the loud mouths go to the cryo cells and look at the stats of the people inside, if they're at 100HP, let them out and leave them there, they'll get out eventually, you have more people to save, remember.
  • Then, start helping the people closest to you and treat as many as possible in this manner. (usually there are few patients in the medbay by this point). Check on those who you treated for deadly diseases at the begining from time to time in this stage.
  • After you're done with everyone, assuming the emergency shuttle hasn't arrived yet, start gathering the body and decide where to get them to.

Cryogenics

Here's a 2 minute video tutorial, the idea behind it is:

  • Put the patient in a sleeper until the cryo is ready
  • Prepare the cryo
  • Put patient in cryo
  • Monitor patient
  • Success!

He's dead, Jim: Genetics, robotics, the morgue or the chapel?

If a body is brought in, you will frequently be the one to decide which department it should go in. Here's a brief overview of what will happen if you bring a body to a specific department:

Genetics research

Файл:Assistant dead.gif --> Файл:Assistant.gif

The geneticist will put the body in the cloning machine, press a button and hopefully their brain wasn't damaged, making it possible to clone them and bring them back to life.

In most cases you should bring the body to genetics, if they have a half-competent geneticist.

Robotics laboratory

Файл:Assistant dead.gif --> Файл:Cyborg.gif

The roboticist will frequently be in need of bodies. Once he makes a metal suit he'll want a brain to put into it. Experience teaches us that roboticsts are often very whiny when you want a patient to be revived, instead of made into a cyborg. The question is often weather the person would like to be a cyborg and usually... most people don't.

Bring the body to this lab if you don't have a competent geneticist.

The morgue

Файл:Assistant dead.gif --> Файл:Morgue full.gif

To most people this is a new place, which they NEVER visit. The morgue is intended for the storing of bodies, but no-one really uses it, so it's actually a very good place to HIDE bodies. If you're a revolutionary and have just received a dead head of personnel or have done your own part to prevent him from being saved and have no intention in him getting cloned or made into a robot, you can just stuff his body in the morgue and no-one will ever know it's there. Also remember to check his backpack and box for goodies and to relieve him from his identity card. (You didn't hear this here, right?)

The chapel

Файл:Assistant dead.gif --> Файл:Coffin.gif

The chaplain has a boring existence on SS13 and is usually one of the first to be dragged into the medbay, dead. Actually it's extremely rare for a chaplain to be on the emergency shuttle when it leaves. You can make him happy by bringing a body to him, either one which you don't want to see again or one which can't be revived.
